Another chapter in the glorious rivalry that exists between current Super League champions Ballina Town and pretenders to the crown Westport Utd will be crafted on Sunday in Milebush Park. The FCS Cup presents Ballina Town with an opportunity to resurrect their campaign that has been patchy of late. However they will have their work cut out against the Covies, but they have the necessary tools to get the job done.

Wining the title would have been the most important thing for Westport United when the Elverys Sports Super League kicked off, but as the weeks went by and the wins kept piling up, the potential of their going all the way through the league with a 100 per cent record looked to be a real possibility. And in their 13th of 18 games in the league last weekend, right until deep injury time in the Sports Park they looked to be on course to make it 13 from 13. But Michael Guilfoyle had other ideas, the Straide and Foxford United striker nodded into the back of the net from close range four minutes into injury time to stop Westport United’s chase for perfection.

After 13 games in the Welcome Inn Hotel Premier A Division, they cannot be separated on points, but come Sunday either Conn Rangers or Swinford FC will be heading home with a piece of silverware for the winter when they meet in the Westaro Cup final. Both sides are competing in one of the tightest league races seen in recent years as they battle for the title promotion to the Elverys Sports Super League with Westport United B (who even if they win the league cannot get promoted) and Ballyglass. The current league table has Westport out in front with 29 points, the three other sides locked together on 28 points with five games to go in the league.

That win by the side who are bottom in the table all but killed off any slim chance that Ballina had of catching Westport United in the top. Fahy left it late, when Tommy Gill struck twice in the final few minutes of the game, the first four minutes from time and the second three minutes into injury time.

Westport United kept up their 100 per cent record in the Elverys Sports Super League on Sunday, but they were made to work hard to maintain their winning run by Charlestown Athletic. Two late second half goals was what separated the teams at the full time whistle with David Cameron and David Hoban hit the target late on.

I don’t know if any bookmakers are giving odds on the men from the Sportspark going through the whole season with a 100 per cent record, never mind unbeaten, but if they are they are surely shrinking with each week that goes by. Last Sunday, Outside the Box made its way along to Ballyglass for the clash of the top two in the Premier A division and did not leave disappointed, as Swinford held out against their hosts to record a 3-2 win and send them top of the table by two points. The game itself was the proverbial game of two halves with Swinford looking home and hosed 10 minutes before half time after going into a 3-0 lead, but the straight red card needlessly picked up by midfielder Padraig Noone just before the break turned the game on its head. Up to that point Val Kenny’s men had been bossing the game with their number nine Alan Carter the main man on the pitch, scoring two goals and causing all kinds of problems for Tom Connolly’s side.

Mayo travel to Hyde Park on Sunday to take on Roscommon in the Connacht semi-final.  It’s remarkable that it has only been five weeks since we played New York in Gaelic Park. It feels like that game was in a different year. I mentioned in a column a few weeks back that James Horan should keep five or six midfielders in his panel, however I didn’t envisage what was going to happen after that. Tom Parsons is the latest to be struck down with a bad hamstring tear on top of Barry Moran and Jason Gibbons already suffering disheartening injuries. They say things happen in threes, so I hope no more players join them on the casualty list. No time is a good time to get injured but end of May/early June is the nightmare time for any footballer. If your injury is so bad that you are not able to participate in any level of training it may leave you on the scrap heap for the rest of the year as the stamina and fitness levels you have worked so hard to build up will dwindle away like a puff of smoke.

The Westport United juggernaut continues to rumble through the Elvery’s Sports Super League. This weekend the league will see a third of the games completed and the Coveys are on what looks like an unstoppable roll, with five wins from five so far and 26 goals scored. On Saturday evening it looks like a dead cert that they will make it six from six when they host bottom of the table Iorras Aontaithe in the Sports Park at 7pm.
